New changes in AP style

APStyelAs PR professionals, it is essential that we follow proper AP style. It’s important to stay knowledgeable about AP style changes.

The new edition of the Associated Press style book contains over 300 corrections from the previous year.

One style update is in regards to reporting the news. When reporting a suicide, the new rule suggests that you, as an AP style writer, avoid using the phrase “committed suicide” unless said in a direct quotation.

Another update is about Twitter, which is perfect for social media users in the public relations field, and mentions that the word “favorite” can be used to express approval, and can also be used as a verb when someone “favorites a tweet.”

For those of you doing PR in the food industry, there is an update for you too! This one simply states that when writing about a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich, just writing BLT will suffice.
